Blas Jiménez

No Text Blas Jiménez was foremost among those poets claiming an African identity contrary to ethnic classification norms in the Dominican Republic. His verses sing of the social realities and the politics of affirming a distinct African ethnic identity. Jiménez confronts and counters the vilification and oppression of blackness within the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean. He published four volumes of poetry, most recently, Versos en cuentos para espantar zombies (1996). Blas Jiménez died in November 2009.
