IMOINDA or She Who Will Lose Her Name: A play for twelve voices in three acts
This libretto re-writes Aphra Behn's Oroonoko, first published in 1688.
It tells the story that foregeounds the experience of the enslaved African woman. In this version Imoinda is given voice and adapts to give birth to a child who will also represent the triumphant survival of African-heritage people forcibly transplanted in the diaspora. The story subversively revises the very reality that inspired Behn's fiction.
